What programming languages do you know?

Question

I'm interested to see how many languages most programmers end up learning and what languages are the most useful or popular. I've seen people talk about C#, Visual Basic, SQL, Java, and Python a lot.

I thought it would be good to write down a list of programming languages to see which is the most popular..

I think that developers typically choose the programming languages they learn based on a) the primary environments their organizations support, eg: if the company and the project manager strongly support Microsoft products and urge the team to develop on/for those products, then the developer goes with the flow and picks up what suits his/her work the most. This is not to say that the developer cannot branch out on his/her own personal interests...which brings me to point b b) personal leanings towards a vendor/platform/open source environment. Eg: At his workplace, a developer may use Java but may personally like Ruby a lot and therefore explores Ruby in his spare time. c) points a and b apply mostly to already working professionals but there are other categories too...students for example. They will learn the languages that are part of their courses (which again they have chosen arbitrarily or based on the languages they Want to learn). d) People move on with the times, hence may have started with C but are working on C# today. Personally, I can say that I know these languages but am not a complete master of any (I have a fairly good command over them is all I can say): C, C++, Java, C#, VB.NET, SQL etc.

I agree with all your points there-obviously a seasoned campaigner :-) Programmers do move with the times-e.g. although C is used extensively out there it will eventually be superceded by other languages. Even C# (one day, maybe in many years time) will be replaced by something else! Good comments!
