In previous versions there was option to create public Portals as well.. However now you can create internal or intranet portals only. Then again you can share files with external users.

In On Premises Versions of SharePoint like SP2010 2013 we can create all of the above-mentioned sites. But in SharePoint Online we can create only Intranet sites/portals in which we can create Communication sites and Team Sites only.

In Sharepoint we can able to create Online or OnPrem sites. Using OnPrem we can able to create Intranet Internet and Extranet. Using Online we can able to create Internet and Extranet.
