What is Gateway Design Pattern

When I googled about this design pattern I found the Gateway is acting like a mediator between the client and the services. Long story short client is making a request then it's going to the gateway their it decides which service to call. I don't know whether my understanding is close to correct or not. Little guidance needed on gateway pattern.
