Consider using 3rd party authentication providers (like Google, Facebook, X) and the OAUTH2, token based authentication pattern. Then, when the user authenticates, you generate a Hash of their supplied password (plus salt) and compare that to the stored Hash. Consider using Public-Private key encryption (as shown in Sophia's example) to encrypt passwords as they are sent accross the wire. This is manadatory if you are not sending data via an encrypted channel such as HTTPS and it's a good idea in all cases. Here's one way to approach salting a hash.
