Adding on to Sophia Carter's answer: In modern applications user name + password authentication is becoming less common. Consider using 3rd party authentication providers (like Google Facebook X) and the OAUTH2 token based authentication pattern. This saves you from having to manage user passwords and it saves your users from having to remember yet another password. If you do need to implmement user name + password authentication remember to never ever store user passwords. Instead when a user sets or updates their password store a Hash (as shown in Sofia's code sample) and preferrably a Salted Hash (see below). Then when the user authenticates you generate a Hash of their supplied password (plus salt) and compare that to the stored Hash. Consider using Public-Private key encryption (as shown in Sophia's example) to encrypt passwords as they are sent accross the wire. This is manadatory if you are not sending data via an encrypted channel such as HTTPS and it's a good idea in all cases. Here's one way to approach salting a hash. The idea here is you pass in the plain text password and you get back both the salt and hash which you can store for authenticating subsequent requests.
