Application Programming Interface which we know as an API. API just allow software or applications to communicate with each another like from application could be web based, mobile based or any damn application. I would say an API is just a publicly available web-based API that returns data in JSON or XML or other medium. It just a medium, how to transfer your data via web to serve purpose of application(s).
