As per my understanding the goal is to swap the student names of consecutive rows. For example Amit and Deepa should swap Rohit and Anjali should swap and so on. If there's an odd number of rows the last student remains in place. In SQL we can use a CASE statement along with the LEAD and LAG window functions to swap the names of consecutive rows. SELECT id CASE WHEN id % 2 = 1 THEN COALESCE(LEAD(student) OVER (ORDER BY id) student) WHEN id % 2 = 0 THEN LAG(student) OVER (ORDER BY id) END AS student FROM students ORDER BY id; LEAD(student) OVER (ORDER BY id) gets the next student's name. LAG(student) OVER (ORDER BY id) gets the previous student's name. CASE statement is used to swap the names: If the id is odd we take the next student's name. If the id is even we take the previous student's name. COALESCE checks that if there is no next student (i.e. for the last row) the current student's name remains unchanged.
