Setting DetectNewerInstalledVersion = True and RemovePreviousVersion = True

Question

where do I find DetectNewerInstalledVersion and RemovePreviousVersion? and how do I set them to be true? I am using VS 2010 .NET 4.0 (but other users may wish to know how to dothis on other versions)

Ah, that's the property pages. If you look down at the Properties Box for the solution, then they should be listed in there.

As long as the connection string is valid when used from that machine, then you shouldn't have a problem. If you have (or have access to) another machine, then it's a good idea to have a 'dry run' with the installation file to make sure that there are not likely to be any unforeseen problems before you distribute it to the users.

the win32 project has a specified connection to a sql sever when it is installed onto the pc will it find that sql server if the pc its installed on has access to the server? if this issue is different enough is will start new thread

That's right Alec. You'll be able to distribute the .msi file so that it can install the application on the user's computer.

have done this now. does this mean when the solution builds and is deployed it will use the setup project to install the win32 project?

Well, there's two types of deployment with VS 2010: * Click-once * Windows Installer To use the properties you're talking about, you have to use the second of these options which creates an .msi file - i.e. a wizard-based installation file - which your users can then run. To create this type of file, you have to add a deployment project (normally a setup project) to your solution. That's strange, they should be there. See for example: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/seykw6dt.aspx Are you sure it is a deployment project i.e. an InstallShield, Setup or Web Setup project?

If you right click on the name of the solution itself in Solution Explorer for your deployment project and then select Properties from the dropdown, they should be in there.
