in vb.net what is this telling me? ddlDefault = ddlPropertyType.Items.FindByValue(Trim(bpo.PropertyInfo.propertyCharacteristics.propertyType))

Try not feel defeated by this, you really just need to get the whole picture and I don't think there is anyone that would be bent out of shape by asking for the rest of the code.

thank you so much, I think I am whipped by this though and am going to send what I have done and see if it is enough. I do feel like you said that this may be an impossibe project with what I have been given. thank you for all your help

ddlDefault = ddlPropertyType.Items.FindByValue(Trim(bpo.PropertyInfo.propertyCharacteristics.propertyType)) ddlDefault I assume is a string but it might be a list item since find by value actually returns a list item and not a string. "ddl" is hungarian notion indicating that the control is a drop down list, so there is a drop down list called ddlPropertyType. It has a collection of items, each item can have a text property and a value property. You can search the items in the drop down list using FindByValue (looking at the value side of the pair) or using FindbyText (searching the text side of the pair). Both return the matching list item if the text or value is found. Trim is an operation that can be performed on strings to remove added spaces at the beginning or end of a string, this call is trimming off the front and back whitespace on bpo.PropertyInfo.Prop...etc In C#, it would look a little different, something like this would work if ddlDefault is a list item: ddlDefault = ddlPropertyType.Items.FindByValue(bpo.PropertyInfo.propertyCharacteristics.propertyType.ToString().Trim()); or if ddlDefault is a string and not a list item, this would work: ddlDefault = ddlPropertyType.Items.FindByValue(bpo.PropertyInfo.propertyCharacteristics.propertyType.ToString().Trim()).Text.ToString();
