.NET Web API action method's attributes FromBody and FromUri

Question

Why we use FromUri or FromBody attributes in the action method of Web API. What is the main application or uses of these two attributes?. What is the difference between FromUri and FromBody?. Please give an example for each of them.

Hi Adalat, In simple words, both are used for parameter binding in Web api. FromURI attribute intruct that Web API will get the parameter value from the query string. FromBody attribute intruct that Web API will get the parameter value from the request body. By default Web API behavior is 1. If parameter is a primitive type like string, int, decimal then Web API get the value from the URI from request. 2. If you are going to use complex types like your own object Web API get the value from the Body from request. in above cases you dont need to write [FromUri] or [FromBody] but in vice-versa cases you need to write [FromUri] or [FromBody] because by default primitive type, Web API is looking in URI and complex type in Body. If you want your Web API to read a complex type from the URI, add the [FromUri] attribute to the parameter: Like http://localhost/api/values/?Latitude=47.678558&Longitude=-122.130989 public HttpResponseMessage Post([FromBody] string name) { ... } and if you want your Web API to read a simple type from the request body, add the [FromBody] attribute to the parameter: public HttpResponseMessage Post([FromBody] int id, [FromBody] string name) { ... }
