The .NET applications and services operate within the .NET Framework (pronounced "dot net framework"). .NET applications do not directly access the operating system. Instead, they use the .NET framework, and the . NET framework accesses the operating system and hardware. The framework consists of two components: The . NET Framework Class Library, and The Common Language Runtime (CLR ) The framework manages memory management, code execution, etc., and that is why . NET applications are called "managed applications." The Common Type System makes sure that all . NET applications use the same data types. The Visual Basic Compiler converts the humanly readable source code into an intermediate language. This intermediate language is also called Microsoft Intermediate Language (or MSIL), and it is contained in an assembly. Assemblies have either a .exe (executable) or .dll (class library) extension. The Common Language Runtime (CLR) converts the intermediate language into the native language needed by the operating system. This is what makes . NET applications platform independent . Currently the CLR is only available on Windows Systems, but someday CLR's could be developed of Unix and Linux. This would allow . NET applications to execute in these environments.

The Common Language Runtime (CLR) is Microsoft's implementation of the Common Language Infrastructure (CLI) . At least you will find that said many places if you search. The CLI is a subset of .Net and one thing I am not sure of is whether the CLR implements all of .Net. It is very misleading to say that "Currently the CLR is only available on Windows Systems" without mentioninig the Mono Project which is very much available right now for Linux and Mac and other systems including iPhones and Android phones. Mono is an implementation of .Net. Also see Mono (software) . Is there any reliable source indicating that the CLR will ever exist outside of Windows?

When IBM designed the PC they contracted with a company to make a Basic interpreter for it. The company became Microsoft. The original Basic interpreter stored the programs in a translated format. Years later, Microsoft developed a way to compile C++ code to a P-code, which I think is like the code used for Basic. Also, Sun designed a language called Java that is similar to C++ that could be easily ported to many computers. Java is proprietary; which means that if anyone wants to do something with Java that Sun does not like, then Sun can tell them they cannot do it. Microsoft made a Java that Microsoft thought was better but Sun did not. So there was a big war; a legal war. Microsoft lost in the manner that they could not use their Java like they wanted to. Microsoft designed the Common Language Infrastructure (CLI) which is an environment like the Java environment that allows CLI and software that uses it to execute in many types of coumputers. So that makes C# and VB similar to Java in that they are all easily ported to many types of computers. The CLI uses P-code technology similar to what the IBM PC Basic interpreter used (I think; I have no evidence of it) and similar to the C++ P-code (I assume). Microsoft got the CLI adopted as an international standard and .Net and C# and VB .Net uses the CLI. So .Net is the implementation of a standard; Java is still proprietary to Sun.
