MAPI - Two simple questions

Question

Hi,
I've got two questions.. I just want to be sure..

1) Using MAPI, It's possible to write an application (for example in C#), which will be receiving and sending e-mails, WITHOUT any other email client application (Outlook etc.). The ONLY thing I need is a Visual Studio and MAPI dll, for example mapi33.dll? Is that correct?

2) Application will receive and send message from any e-mail server? (I mean, it's not only for microsof servers - Microsof
Exchange Server?)

If you have the SMTP mail server in your machine. You can easily achieve it in C# using MailMessage namespace. There you need to specify the SMTP server name, To, From & all other details to send an email

I've already done sending messages by MailMessage class in C#. I just wondered, if there is more advanced method (I mean speed, security.. ).. better method? What is the difference between MAPI and MailMessage ?

Note that sending and receiving are very different. Did you look in .Net? There are classes for sending mail that you can use. I suggest starting with that and then if that is inadequate develop something more advanced, but probably the .Net classes are enough. There are not any .Net classes for receiving mail, but there are articles in this web site that will help you get started with that. The basics of receiving mail is easy; the hard part is doing it asynchronously, but that is not a necessirty. Start with a synchronous email reader. The disadvantage of a synchronous email reader is that you can check only one mailbox per thread.

Thank you for your reply, I want to write an Email client for local email servers, such a Pegasus Mail or Microsof Exchange Server (for small companies). Which will be the best way to do such a project? I read a lot of good words about Extended MAPI, so I thought It will be the best way.
