@Bhavesh As mentioned, you can only use the below code cbbcustomer.Items.Insert(0, "--Select--"); when you are adding items by using cbbcustomer.Items.Add(...); As you are using binding, you can only make changes to the data source like below mds = mfun.showData( "select cust_id, name from customer order by name asc" ); var table= mds.Tables[0]; var row = table.NewRow(); row[ "cust_id" ] = -1; row[ "name" ] = "--Select--" ; table.Rows.InsertAt(row, 0); Do let me know, if its solves your problem

If the data is binded dynamically, you can insert -- select-- text to the datasource (datatable)
