Is it worth learning ADO.NET?

Question

I'm learning C# right now by using a book writen for Visual Studio 2012. The next thing in the book would be about 10 chapters about ADO.NET. But I think I read somewhere that ADO.NET isn't really used anymore anyway and that there are better alternatives. So is it worth to learn ADO.NET? Are there better alternatives? What are those?

You should still learn it as it performs far better than a ORM like Entity Framework or NHibernate. Honestly, you don't need to know much to use it. Open a connection with a SqlConnection. Pass it to a SqlCommand. Code your SQL statement. Add SqlParameter objects to pass parameters to your query. Use a SqlReader to read results in a while-loop.

Yes, ADO .NET still is a good competator among the ORM and in lots of Enterprises application are using ADO .NET. After from this other popular ORM in .NET is Entity Framework or EF Core. EF core is newly rewritten and is faster from Entity Framework but as compare to ADO .NET it is slower due to internally convert the relational object to ADO .NET. Also one ORM is more popular now is Dapper. It's a package that can be use in .NET, it more like to ADO .NET but it can be very simplified and less code writing. As it direct mapping the object it fast as well. so choice is yours which ORM you have to use. Thanks

Yes Ado.net is also good to learn as it is used in both previously developed applications in an organization as well as big applications with complex database structure. However if you search for better alternative then I recommend you to learn entity framework.
