beginner C# programs ???

Question

As still being considered a beginner in C#, what are some really basic applications I can write? What did you guys program to gain experience? Everybody has to start somewhere, and I need a good starting point. Any help is much appreciated.

Question. I have Visual C# 2005 Express. All I want to do is create and EXE and all I can do is click publish and you have to install my program. Whats up with that? I just want an exe fule to run. How would I go about doing so?

I am currently reading Beginning Visual C# 2005 by Wrox. Im into the OOP section of the book. It does cover XML and databases and much more. I'm very excited to learn ;-). Anyone else ever read this book? Mark G.

If you are a beginner of C#, I would say start reading some C# tutorial or C# books to get familiar with the new futures of C#. If you know java and/or C++ is a plus. C# similar to java with lot more new futures. Since you mentioned database and xml, my suggestion to you is to read C# books like "C# for programmers Second Edition" it covers C# 2.0, .NET 2.0/FCL, ASP.NET, Database, Networking, OOP, XML, web server and more. By the way I am not advertising this book it is just because this is what I found helpful. Best Regards,

I'm referring to MySQL/MSSQL or any other databases out there. Buf if you're not yet that familiar with it, yes you could use xml instead for now. It would still be a great practice. And when you're ready with SQL, you can then just modify it. And if you need c# exercises, there's a thread just recently -- C# exercises

Well do you mean using MySQL for adding and editing data? I am not familiar with that yet, and either way I dont have my own server. I'm still new to that kind of topic. I would like to write a program like that without using a database like that. Any good ideas? I'm also new to XML. Couldn't I use XML files for now or am completely on the wrong page? A simple database application like maintaining the list of students in a school would be a good way to start, with functions Add,Edit,Delete and logon.
