On the .NET Platform applications are divided into Assemblies and Modules. An Assembly contains the information required by the .NET runtime to find, load and execute applications on the .NET Platform. Let's take an analogy, when you are building a big application, the general practice is to build all the classes and methods used very often into a single executable (*.exe) file and rest of the required classes are put into Library Dll's. Similarly, on the .NET Platform, the important, basic and regularly used classes form a part of the main file which acts as an assembly file, while the rarely used classes can be put into modules. The logic behind the concept of assemblies and modules lies the fact that with the help of these you can separate out units of code based on their usage and importance, physically (in different files) and logically (in Assemblies and Modules).

Assemblies are the building blocks of .NET Framework applications; they form the fundamental unit of deployment, version control, reuse, activation scoping, and security permissions. An assembly is a collection of types and resources that are built to work together and form a logical unit of functionality.
