Skype is a free or paid service of Microsoft for calling, meeting, and chatting, through which generally we can chat, do online meetings, and file share for free. it also has a paid version through which we can do international calling.

But Microsoft has announced that on May 5, 2025, Skype will be retired. And it will affect both Microsoft's paid and free versions of Skype.

Skype users now have the option to migrate to Teams, just like Skype had free chat and call features like Skype. Teams Free also has some extra features like hosting meetings, managing calendars, and building and joining communities. We will also see all these in Teams.

When you are using Skype you get this type of pop-up on your screen's top Bar.

What is Microsoft Teams?

Microsoft Teams is a team collaboration tool developed by Microsoft as part of the Microsoft 365 family of products, Teams provides us with many features such as workspace chat and video conferencing, file storage, and integration.

Conclusion

By switching to Teams, Microsoft will get the authority to handle the license because Teams is a part of Microsoft 365 and is currently completely free. You will also get to see some new features and there were some problems in Skype, like chats in groups and Skype chats used to get lost when there was too much data. there is no such issue in Teams, it is just that it will take some time for the Skype data to sink.
