Create Managed Paths In SharePoint 2013

Managed Paths 

Managed paths are used to customize the URL of a site in order to make the URL more user-friendly and aligned with your business requirements.

It also helps the users to recognize what kind of URL they are accessing. Basically, there are two types of managed paths:

  • Wildcard inclusion - Create multiple site collection using this path.
  • Explicit inclusion - Only one site collection with specified address.

 

Note
Twenty managed paths per web application are recommended.

Creating managed paths is only available on SharePoint on-premises and not in SharePoint Online / Office 365. There are only two inbuilt managed paths online, i.e. /Sites or /teams

WildCard Inclusion

To create wildcard inclusion managed path, please follow the below steps.
  1. Open the SharePoint Central Administrator.
  2. Go to Application Management-> Manage web application


  3. Select the web application and click on the Managed Paths.



  4. Enter the value in path field and click on the "check URL" button to check if the path already exists. If page returns a 404 error then that particular managed path does not exist and we can create it.

    Select the wildcard inclusion option from the Type drop-down and click on "Add path".



  5. Now, to verify, we can create multiple site collections using wildcard inclusion managed paths.

    Go to Application Management -> create site collection.



  6. Select the appropriate web application and in the URL, select the newly created wildcard inclusion. If text box is visible after the wildcard inclusion, then we can confirm that we can create multiple site collections using wildcard inclusion managed paths.

     
Explicit inclusion

To create explicit inclusion, please follow the below steps.
  1. Repeat 1-3 steps from wildcard inclusion steps.
  2. Enter the value in path field and click on to "check URL" button to check if the path is already exists. If page returns a 404 error then that particular managed path does not exist and we can create it.

    Select the Explicit inclusion option from type dropdown and click on add path.



  3. Now to verify we can create only one sitecollection using explicit inclusion manage paths.

    Go to Application Management -> create site collection



  4. Select the appropriate web application and in the url select the newly-created explicit inclusion. If text box is not visible after the wildcard inclusion then we can confirm that we can create only one site collection using explicit inclusion managed paths.



    In case of sharepoint online currently two inbuilt managed paths are supported
